I commenced my studies at The Pharmacy College of Victoria (now Monash Parkville Campus) in 1972 and went on to do my training at Stone’s Pharmacy in Kyabram where I first met Agata. I qualified in 1976 and in June of the same year Agata and I were married. We moved to Preston where I managed Hansen and Chiera Pharmacy for a year. Being raised in the country we decided Melbourne was not for us and we moved to manage Flanagan and Poole in Mildura. Distance to Kyabram proved to us that we needed to be closer to family and so we again relocated to work in Benalla at Philip Messenger’s Amcal Pharmacy.
For the 18 months I worked in Benalla, Agata worked in Shepparton at Brennan and Stone Pharmacy in Wyndham Street which now is the business we own.
John Anderson Pharmacy commenced in 1979 when Agata and I together with mentor and partner Darcy Brennan purchased the existing pharmacy business in Wyndham Street previously known as “ Carrols Central Pharmacy”. We traded as Anderson and Brennan since Darcy Brennan was our “silent partner”. It was a modest beginning with me working as the sole pharmacist with three pharmacy assistants.
In the past nearly four decades our pharmacy has expanded and grown to the business it is today. At the same time as our Pharmacy grew we added to our own family with the birth of our three daughters Elizabeth, Nicola and Bridget and we are now delighted to proudly boast nine grandchildren.
In 1990 and moving with the times Agata and I saw the need of sharing professional ideals and being part of a bigger pharmacy community by joining the banner group of Guardian.
Over the years we have had incredibly talented people on our team who have shared the family ideals of our pharmacy and at the same time provided excellent pharmacy service to the people of Shepparton and surrounding districts. Our strong connection to our associate pharmacists and pharmacy assistants is one to be proud off and a large number of our team have worked together for many years. In the early years of our business I worked as a sole pharmacist for twelve years and in 1991 we purchased and relocated Terry Phillips Pharmacy, into our store and with it came additional staff members and Terry’s Veterinary business.
Over the years we have been fortunate to have the stability of long-term pharmacists who have been an integral part of our dispensary team. Jo Burgess after selling her Pharmacy in Murchison has worked in our business for fifteen years and has contributed both to the community and to our business ethos. Jo worked full time for twelve years and now currently works three days a week.
Our youngest daughter Bridget attended Notre Dame College and worked in the pharmacy from year 10 after school and Saturday mornings. Bridget studied pharmacy at Latrobe University in Bendigo from 2004 and worked every Saturday and over the long Christmas breaks. She completed her Pre Registration year and qualified in 2008. She married Brad Varapodio in March 2010. Bridget is currently on family leave and has three children Tahlia, Samuel and Marcella, which keep her on her toes. Bridget is now working part time and father and daughter make a great team.
Laura Grasso born and raised in Shepparton worked for us whilst a student at Notre Dame College and during her studies at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga. Laura completed her Pre Registration year and qualified in 2013. She currently works fulltime and with her brings vigour and energy to our dispensary.
Since 1979 John Anderson Pharmacy has cared for and supported local families for more than a generation and with the new generation here to build on a strong foundation, the future is looking very bright. We are proud to share our family history and we would like to give your family the edge and knowledge about all your health and wellbeing needs.
We know, we care, we listen.
